Parts of Speech in English Grammar – Types, Rules & Examples for CSS/PMS

Parts of Speech are the basic categories into which English words are divided according to the function they perform in a sentence. In competitive examinations such as CSS, PMS, FPSC, PPSC and other one-paper exams, questions are often not limited to simple definitions. Examiners may give the same word in different sentences and ask whether it is functioning as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, or interjection.

The most important rule is that the part of speech of a word depends on its use in the sentence, not only on the word itself.
