Earth's Shape and Structure

Earth's Shape and Structure: The Earth is not a perfect sphere. Because of its rotation, it is slightly bulged at the equator and flattened at the poles. This shape is known as an oblate spheroid, while the term geoid is also used for Earth's nearly spherical but slightly irregular form.

The Earth's mean radius is about 6,371 km. Its equatorial diameter is approximately 12,756 km, while the polar diameter is about 12,714 km. This difference shows that the Earth is slightly wider around the equator.
